Finance & Investment Studies – Undergraduate Programme Overview

Finance and Investment Studies as an undergraduate programme focuses on the principles and practices involved in financial management, capital markets, investment analysis, and wealth creation. It equips students with the analytical and decision-making skills required to manage financial assets, assess investment opportunities, and support both individual and corporate financial goals. The programme typically spans four years and leads to the award of a Bachelor of Science (B.Sc.) in Finance and Investment Studies.

Students in this programme take courses in corporate finance, investment analysis, financial markets and institutions, portfolio management, risk management, financial modelling, international finance, accounting, banking operations, and business law. The goal is to prepare graduates who can operate in fast-paced financial environments, provide investment advisory services, and support sound economic growth through financial planning and innovation.

Admission Requirements for Finance & Investment Studies

1. National Requirements (UTME and SSCE)

O’Level Requirements (WAEC/NECO/NABTEB)
Candidates must obtain at least five (5) credit passes in the following subjects:

  • English Language

  • Mathematics

  • Economics

  • Any two other relevant subjects (e.g., Accounting, Commerce, Government, or Geography)

Credits must be obtained at not more than two sittings.

UTME Subjects
Candidates must sit for and pass the following:

  • Economics

  • Mathematics

  • One other subject from Accounting, Commerce, or Government

Minimum UTME Score

  • Most institutions require a UTME score of 180–200

  • Highly competitive institutions may require 220 or higher

JAMB Subject Combination

  • Economics, Mathematics, and one other relevant subject (such as Accounting or Government)


2. Direct Entry (DE) Requirements

Candidates applying for Direct Entry into 200 Level must have one of the following:

  • At least two A-Level passes in Economics and any other relevant subject such as Mathematics or Accounting.

  • ND/NCE with merit or upper credit in Banking and Finance, Accounting, Business Administration, or related fields.

  • JUPEB/IJMB passes in Economics and two other commercial or social science subjects.


3. University or Faculty-Specific Requirements

  • Some universities conduct a Post-UTME or aptitude test.

  • A strong background in mathematics, commerce, and business-related subjects is essential.

  • Certain institutions may accept Commerce or Government in place of a second social science subject.

  • Prior exposure to financial literacy, investment clubs, or entrepreneurship programmes can be an added advantage.
